5 Ways to Make Discipling Your Kids Fun
Discipling our children is one of the most important responsibilities we have as parents, but it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Between busy schedules, homework, and extracurricular activities, finding meaningful ways to teach your kids about God can feel like a heavy task. The good news is that discipling your kids doesn’t have to be a chore—it can be fun, interactive, and full of joy. Over the years, I’ve discovered ways to make Bible time a special part of our family’s day, and I want to share some of those tips with you.
I also want to share a resource that I created that has been an incredible help in our family: my kids’ devotional, Getting to Know God: A 40-Day Adventure for Kids. This devotional is designed to introduce children to God’s attributes through Bible stories, reflection questions, prayers, and creative activities. It’s perfect for making discipleship hands-on, engaging, and enjoyable for kids of all ages.
Here are five ways to make discipling your kids fun, inspired by both my experiences as a mom and teacher and the practices in my devotional.
1. Turn Bible Stories into Interactive Games
One of the easiest ways to make Bible time fun is to make it active. Kids love movement, so use that energy to help them engage with God’s Word.
For example:
-
Bible Charades: Have your kids act out parts of a story while you guess what’s happening.
-
Matching Games: Create cards with Bible characters on one set and their attributes or key actions on another, and have your kids match them.
-
Story Reenactments: Use simple props from around the house to help your children retell Bible stories.
In Getting to Know God: A 40-Day Adventure for Kids, each story includes discussion questions and creative prompts that naturally lend themselves to interactive activities like these. By turning stories into games, children not only retain what they’ve learned but also have fun doing it.
2. Make Prayer Time Interactive
Prayer is central to discipleship, but sometimes it can feel formal or intimidating for kids. Making prayer interactive can change that.
Try these ideas:
-
Prayer Jars: Have your kids write prayer requests on slips of paper and take turns drawing one to pray for each day.
-
Prayer in Their Words: Encourage children to pray aloud in their own words. You may be surprised by their heartfelt and honest prayers!
-
Family Prayer Time: Set aside a specific time each day where everyone prays together, sharing things they’re thankful for or worried about.
The devotional emphasizes that prayer doesn’t have to be complicated—it can be joyful, honest, and age-appropriate. Even the wiggliest kids can participate in meaningful ways!
3. Incorporate Praise and Worship
Kids are naturally drawn to music and movement, so worship can be a powerful way to engage them in faith.
Ideas include:
-
Mini Dance Party: Play worship music and let your kids dance and sing along.
-
Instrument Time: If you have simple instruments like shakers, tambourines, or even pots and spoons, let your kids play along to worship songs.
-
Sing Along: Pick a few simple worship songs and make them part of your morning or bedtime routine.
This is one of my favorite ways to help children feel God’s presence in a tangible way. Music and movement can make spiritual concepts memorable and exciting for young hearts.
4. Use Bible Journaling and Drawing
Kids are creative by nature, so encouraging them to draw, color, or journal about Bible stories can make discipleship hands-on.
Try these activities:
-
Sketch Bible Scenes: Have your children draw their favorite part of a story you read together.
-
Attribute Journals: In Getting to Know God: A 40-Day Adventure for Kids, each story highlights an attribute of God. Let your kids illustrate what that attribute looks like in their own lives.
-
Creative Reflections: Encourage them to write or draw a “prayer picture” showing what they learned.
This is not only fun but helps children process spiritual truths in a visual and memorable way. Plus, it gives them a keepsake of their faith journey that they can look back on over the years.
5. Keep It Short, Sweet, and Consistent
Children have short attention spans, so it’s important to keep Bible lessons concise and engaging. You don’t need to spend hours each day discipling your kids to make an impact.
Some tips:
-
Short Lessons: Focus on a single story or attribute at a time.
-
Creative Timing: If your child is eager to dive into crafts or activities, do the devotional earlier in the day rather than at bedtime.
-
Consistency Over Length: Even 10–15 minutes of consistent, focused Bible time each day can make a huge difference in your child’s spiritual growth.
The devotional provides flexibility for parents—you can choose the stories and activities that work best for your family, and the length of engagement can be adjusted to your child’s attention span.
Why Getting to Know God: A 40-Day Adventure for Kids Helps
This devotional was created with real families in mind. As a mom of two daughters and a former preschool teacher, I understand the challenges of discipling wiggly, energetic children. The book combines Bible stories, reflection questions, prayers, and hands-on activities to help kids internalize who God is in a fun and meaningful way.
It’s designed to:
-
Introduce God’s attributes in a simple, understandable way
-
Include creative activities that reinforce learning
-
Encourage discussion and personal reflection
-
Allow parents to tailor lessons based on their child’s age and engagement
Even if your kids are squirming, distracted, or full of energy, the devotional makes it easy to keep them engaged while building a foundation of faith that will last a lifetime.
Final Thoughts
Discipling your kids doesn’t have to feel like a chore. By turning Bible time into games, interactive prayer, worship, and creative activities, you can make learning about God a joyful adventure for the whole family. Getting to Know God: A 40-Day Adventure for Kids is a wonderful tool to help you do just that, providing structure, creativity, and fun while pointing your children to Jesus.
Remember: even when it doesn’t look perfect, your kids are soaking in God’s truth. Keep going, stay consistent, and enjoy these special moments of faith and fun together. You are shaping hearts for eternity—one story, one prayer, and one craft at a time.
Happy discipling!
